The remains of 14 Vietnam War martyrs have been unearthed from a mass grave in the central province of Quang Tri.
According to local authorities, the grave was discovered in Dong Ha Town on Thursday when locals were digging the foundation for a temple for their ancestors.
The remains were found buried around one meter underground and in two rows some two meters apart. The soldiers' belongings like shoes, bullets and grenades were also found.
Initial information is that the martyrs died on April 6, 1972 when their regiment attacked US forces to free the province.
The provincial Military Headquarters and the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs along with related agencies are expanding the excavation.
Last week authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh also found the remains of 16 Vietnam War martyrs at the construction site of a drainage system.
