Reckless motorist detained after killing traffic cop in central Vietnam

Police in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue announced Sunday that a man who crashed his bike into a traffic police officer, claiming his life, has been detained for three months pending further investigations.

They say that Hoang Rin, 22, was driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding at the time of the accident, newswire VnExpress reported.

On the evening of August 6, Senior-Lieutenant Phan Van Phuc, 31, and another police officer Vo Huu Tai of Phu Loc District's Traffic Police Division arrived at the scene of a road accident.

After their work was done, Tai was riding a motorbike with Phuc riding pillion, patrolling a section of National Highway 1A at around 10 p.m., when they were hit by Rin.

Police say that Rin, driving recklessly without observing the traffic, was entering the highway from a cemetery nearby with another person sitting behind on his bike.

Phuc was thrown out of the bike, and his head hit the road.

All the four people were injured in the accident, Phuc sustaining the most serious injuries. He had his right leg broken and suffered from brain trauma. He died after five days of treatment.
