Border guards in central Vietnam on Saturday intercepted a local boat illegally carrying more than 400 kilograms of black coral, news website Vnexpress said Monday.

Fisherman Duong Van Giau was found to have stored the coral in 47 packs. All have been detained for further investigation, the border guard command at Quang Ngai Province, said.

In recent years, more and more fishermen have been collecting black coral. Quang Ngai officials have already investigated many cases this year alone.

Vietnam bans any kinds of collecting and trading of black coral. But the high demand for coral for medicine and fine arts handicrafts has set its price as high as several million dong a kilogram.

Black coral is disappearing from Vietnam waters, authorities have said.
