Police in the southern province of Bac Lieu are investigating a prostitution ring that employs female university students after arresting two of them.

One of the girls, only identified by her initials L.P.T., is a 20-year-old student at a university in Bac Lieu, news website VietNamNet reported Saturday.

She and her schoolmate were caught with their customers at a local guest house on Tuesday.

T. said she has provided the service seven times for VND1 million (US$48) each.

She said she was introduced to customers by Truong Thi Hoa, 34, an employee of the guest house.

Hoa is likely to be charged with brokering prostitution.

In May this year, police in Hanoi also busted a student prostitution ring organized by two women, one 43 and the other 19. Customers were charged VND2 million and the women took half the payment.

The service is also available in Ho Chi Minh City, with officials saying at a meeting in August that the high income from prostitution has attracted many students and high income models and actresses.

A study carried out by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs over the first six months this year estimates the average monthly income of sex workers at more than VND10 million (US$480).
