Police in the north central Vietnamese province of Nghe An Sunday rescued a pregnant woman who had been held hostage and beaten up by two men for her husband's failure to repay a debt.

Phan Trong Hieu and his brother-in-law Tran Duc Dung were arrested for abducting woman Le Thi Trang, 24, a day earlier.

They took her to Hieu's house after her husband Vu Duc Hoai, who owns a pawnshop, fled without repaying a VND650 million (US$31) debt he owed Hieu.

They beat her up despite knowing she was three month pregnant, and forced her to call her parents and ask for money, threatening her life was at risk.

She was beaten while speaking to her parents so that they could hear.

The parents informed the police.
