A police officer in Thua Thien-Hue Province in central Vietnam is not facing gambling charges due to health reasons after his colleagues caught him playing a card game with seven others.
Police early this week detained five people for gambling and restricted two others from leaving the area.
But they said they will deal with Dinh Xuan Tuong, a lieutenant colonel, later. They promised to "strictly follow the rules."
Tuong’s family has presented medical records showing that he is receiving treatment for diabetes and tuberculosis.
Police seized dong and dollar notes worth more than US$4,180 in the midnight raid on June 30.
Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.
