Police in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday decided not to file criminal child sex-abuse charges against a French man after he killed himself during the investigation.

They now want to charge the Vietnamese who provided the child prostitutes involved in the case instead.

Vitrac Alexandre Pierre Claude, 39, who used to be in charge of network administration at a company in District 5, jumped from the 19th floor of his apartment last November while investigators searched it for evidence, according to police.

Police have instead asked prosecutors to charge Thi Truong Han, 21, who supplied two boys, both 14 years old, to Claude, for sex acts. It cost Claude between VND300,000 and 500,000 (US$14-24) each time.

The charge of "obscene acts with children" could land Han in jail for between three and 12 years, according to Vietnam's Penal Code.
