A cop in the southern province of Dong Nai fired his gun Saturday during a raid on a gambling den, killing a man.

Lau Nguyen Sau, 39, died en route to hospital.

Sau was shot as around 20 card players fled in panic from the house belonging to local Su A Mui.

Tran Tien Dat, chief of staff of Dong Nai Police, said the gun went off accidentally during a clash between the police officers and the alleged gamblers.

Police are examining Sau's body and the site.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.

Around 20 people were also arrested Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City as police busted a cock-fight gambling den and seized VND100 million (US$19,000) in dong and dollar notes.

Police said at least VND2 million was being wagered on each fight, with the den organizer taking in a 5-percent share.
