The central police investigators have asked the finance ministry to calculate the value of smuggled electronics found on a transport ship of the state-owned shipping firm Vinalines, a source told Thanh Nien Tuesday.

The 50 cartons of electronics, which included iPhones, iPads, and fax machines, were confiscated from the Vinalines Pioneer when it docked at Transvina port in the northern city of Hai Phong on September 3, after returning from Hong Kong, police said.

All the undocumented goods were initially estimated to be worth VND10 billion (US$480,000) in total, according to police.

Four people, including two the ship's captain Bui Tran Nguyen and chief mechanic Nguyen Ngoc Minh, have been arrested as part of the investigation.
