Forest rangers in Vietnam's northern mountainous province of Ha Giang on Sunday caught a police car trafficking precious timber.

They stopped driver Mam Van Huu in Phu Linh Commune, Vi Xuyen District when he was driving more than 1.4 cubic meters of nghien timber owned by Nguyen Van Thinh, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Both Huu and Thinh are Ha Giang police officers.

The timber, known scientifically as Burretiodendron hsienmu, is threatened by habitat loss.

Thinh has admitted owning the timber, saying he has used the office vehicle to traffic the timber.
