Police in the southern province of Ca Mau Friday shot and injured a man who was allegedly gambling in a friend's house.
Tran Thanh Tuan, 30, who is being treated for a bullet shot, said the firing was unprovoked while local authorities said he was shot when he tried to resist and flee.
Tuan said he was playing cards at around 9 p.m. when the police said they wanted to check the house.
Once the door was opened an officer immediately fired from point-blank range, injuring him in the stomach and causing severe bleeding, he said.
He only knew the officer's first name as Xe, he said.
The officers went on to arrest other gamblers before taking him to a medical center, where a nurse put a bandage on the injury, without cleaning it, he said.
Following his protests, the police took him to the Ca Mau General Hospital, where doctors performed a surgery to remove the bullet, he added.
