The Da Nang police have arrested seven people suspected to have illegally bet tens of millions of dollars on soccer games, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported Wednesday.
It quoted Major-general Nguyen Van Son, director of the central city's police department, as saying the seven include one of the ringleaders, Nguyen Anh Cuong, 41, and would be in custody for four months.
Two others were not taken in because they had been "honest" with the police during questioning.
A last suspect, referred to as P. and thought to be another ringleader, is still at large.
The ring, which operated since 2000, was busted on December 21, Son said, adding that many of its members were CEOs of local companies.
Cuong and some others linked up with foreign online soccer betting networks to establish operations in Vietnam.
The police are continuing to investigate.
