A court in southern Vietnam sentenced a commune police chief to 15 months' probation, on Saturday, for leaving his service weapon within the reach of his four-year-old nephew, leading to a fatal accident.
Nguyen Quang Cuong, 29, chief of police in Bau Chinh in Chau Duc District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, was charged with "irresponsibility in handling weapons causing serious consequences."
According to the indictment, on February 1, Cuong came to his sister's house after work.
He reportedly put his K54 pistol in a cupboard and lay down with Bui Duc Hieu, his four-year-old nephew, on a hammock.
Some time later, when Cuong went into the kitchen for water, Hieu fiddled with the gun.
The gun went off by accident, killing the boy on the spot.
It is unclear, at this time, if further action will be taken against the chief.
