Police in the northern Vietnam have busted two illegal sports gambling rings operated by a local man that attracted thousands of people, authorities said Tuesday.
Bui Khac Hien, 52, who lives in Hanoi's Thanh Xuan District, was arrested on Sunday for running the rings online since June last year.
The illegal operations had a total bet value of up to VND7.6 trillion, or over US$340 million, authorities said, adding that the servers of the websites are overseas.
Police also arrested 22 accomplices for further investigation. Several of them acted as debt collectors, they said.
Most players are from northern provinces and cities, including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, police said.
