The Ho Chi Minh City police Tuesday night cordoned off several busy streets in Binh Thanh District to lay siege to and capture a major drug baron and her henchmen.
The five-hour operation, starting at 6 p.m., around the busy Van Kiep market, involved hundreds of officers, officials said.
The drug boss, known only as Lan “heo”, was arrested at around 10:30 p.m.
Her daughter and son, who are allegedly key members of her gang, were among at least 10 others arrested by the police.
Lan, who is in her late forties, has been running a large drug-trafficking gang along with a dozen of her relatives for many years, the police said.
Binh Thanh police chief Nguyen Hoang Thang said the operation followed an investigation launched several months ago, adding that the police came to know about the gang after busting another in District 1 earlier this year.
