Police in the beach city of Phan Thiet Monday arrested six members of an alleged robbery gang which targeted foreign tourists on the street, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
They are all aged from 17 to 20, and two are students of Phan Thiet University.
The police began to look for them after Russian tourist Natalia Sergreva Tsyankova, 44, who was staying at the Sea Lion resort, was robbed while walking on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street at 1:45 Monday afternoon.
She said two young men on a motorbike approached her and grabbed her purse containing US$1,300, 10,000 Russian rubles ($303), VND3.5 million ($166), and other personal papers.
The pair then sped away.
The police quickly caught the two robbers, who then told them about their other accomplices.
The six divided up into three groups and drove around in areas with many foreign tourists.
One of them robbed VND2.2 million ($104) from another foreigner the same afternoon.
They confessed to committing four other robberies.
The police have seized their motorbikes and stolen money.
They are trying to find out who the gang leader is.
