Plainclothes police in the central city of Da Nang are now working outside local bars prone to drug crimes and prostitution.

The city police made the announcement at a meeting last Thursday, after participants argued that it looked inappropriate to have uniformed cops standing around outside bars while crimes went on inside.

Since 2009 Da Nang police have assigned forces to be on duty around local bars between 8 p.m. and 12 p.m. every day.

According to police, the city has no registered discotheques, but eight local bars operate like discotheques and three of them namely New Phuong Dong, TV Club, and F3 Club are open very late and prone to security risks.

Since 2009 Da Nang authorities have allowed some discotheques and bars to stay open until 2 a.m. to serve tourists, although under Vietnamese laws, only discotheques and bars at hotels ranked three-stars and above are permitted to open after 12 p.m.

Nguyen Nho Chinh, deputy head of the police department's internal affairs division, said city authorities should ban all bars and discotheques from opening after midnight.

Police also reported that since 2010, they have caught and punished 276 drug dealers with connections to bars, They have conducted 25 criminal investigations into events that happened at the bars.

They warned that recently they have found signs that criminal gangs are operating as "protection" for local bars with the participation of security guards.
