Two men on motorbikes flung a crudely-made petrol bomb into a car used by Ho Chi Minh City inspectors Friday as they were inspecting a bar in District 1, local news website Vnexpress reported.

According to the inspectors, their car was parked in front of the Lavish Bar on Nguyen Sieu Street at around 1:30 a.m. when the main riding pillion on a motorbike flung a burning object at the car.

But it slid off the car top and landed more than a meter away from it, flaring up.

The car driver, identified only has Hung, extinguished the fire immediately. The motorists have not been identified.

Initial investigations show that the motorists had used a petrol bomb made by filling a Saigon Beer bottle with petrol and sticking a towel into it.

The inspectors, who arrived at the bar at midnight, found many regulations being violated. They also seized pipes and other substances for smoking that were not permitted.

There were nearly a hundred young people in the bar at the time.

Ho Trong Nghia, head of the inspection team, said he was "astonished" by the attempt to bomb their car.

Police are investigating the case.
