Authorities in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province are searching for a passenger who jumped off a tour boat off the southern coast on Friday.
At 5 p.m. on Friday the Con Dao 10 left Ben Dam Port in Con Dao Island district to head for Vung Tau, the capital town of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
When the boat was around 65 nautical miles from Vung Tau, a crew member saw Vo Van Hieu, 36, jumping off the boat at 10:10 p.m.
The captain of the boat released two lifebuoys into the water but Hieu did not hang on. He instead swam away from the boat.
The captain launched a lifeboat but the passenger had gone out of sight.
The crew member deployed a search and called for help from the Vietnam Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of Region 3.
A rescue boat was sent to the site. Another tour boat nearby also joined the search.
The two tour boats left the site at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday to continue their journey.
The rescue boat is still searching for the passenger.
