A passenger couldn't wait any longer to answer nature’s call. His solution: Open the emergency exit door and deploy the emergency slide.
The incident took place in Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport on Friday. The man, Nguyen Thanh Chuong, told the airport authorities later that he opened the exit “by mistake” when he was looking for the toilet.
As a result, the Vietjet Air flight to Ho Chi Minh City was delayed for three hours.
According to the Northern Airports Authority, Chuong’s actions are punishable by a fine of between VND10 and 20 million (US$464-928).
Local media said it cost the airline $10,290 to replace the slide and repair the door.
Plane doors cannot be opened during a flight – cabin pressure doesn’t allow it, and they are further secured by a series of electrical and/or mechanical latches – but on the ground they can be.
