Police in Long An said several burglars broke into the residence of a Party official in the southern province and shot his son after being caught in the act.
The incident happened at around 2 a.m. on December 30 at the house of Nguyen Van Ut, secretary of Duc Hoa District's Party unit, police said at a press briefing Thursday.
Ut was reportedly woken up by some noise and saw one of the burglars near his bed.
He shouted and tried to catch the man, who managed to escape.
His son Nguyen Thanh Tam from upstairs chased after the invader.
One of the two accomplices at the gate shot at Tam before fleeing in a car.
Tam was wounded around his waist and was rushed to hospital.
Pham Chi Thanh, director of Long An Police Department, said the stolen property included 3.75 grams of gold and VND1.65 million (US$73). The gun used by the burglar was not a military grade weapon, he said.
Police are investigating the case.
