Hanoi prosecutors have officially ratified murder charge against a Communist Party official who was involved in a brazen daylight slaying in Hanoi last year.
Le Trung Kien, deputy head of a committee tasked with personnel-related matters at the Cau Giay District Party Unit, was arrested last August along with three other people.
The police established that Kien, 44, brokered an introduction that ended in the fatal stabbing of a Hanoi businessman on a crowded Hanoi street on August 5, 2014.
They said Nguyen Quoc Van, 55, and Kien are friends. After learning that Van was having trouble with a wealthy moneylender named Kieu Ngoc Thanh, Kien allegedly brokered an introduction to a man named Nguyen Kim Binh.
Police say Van paid Binh to “threaten” Thanh, the 55-year old businessman who had lent Van more than VND2 billion (US$94,000) he couldn't pay back. Instead, Binh allegedly hired two men named Hoang Anh Tuan and Le Hong Thuan.
The pair staged a traffic collision with Thanh and Tuan then fatally stabbed him with a knife on Pham Van Dong Street in the morning of August 5, 2014.
Binh, Tuan and Thuan were also indicted on murder.
Van was charged with harboring criminals.
