Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong has ordered an investigation into a provincial official’s alleged illegal use of a blue-colored license plate meant for official cars for his private car.
It follows a Thanh Nien's report about Trinh Xuan Thanh, deputy chairman of the Hau Giang Province People’s Committee, using the blue plate for his luxury Lexus LX570.
The Party chief ordered inspectors to report at the earliest.
Thanh, 50, attracted attention with his VND5.7 billion (US$255,189) car.
He told the media the car belongs to a relative in Hanoi and he had brought it to Hau Giang for his personal use after becoming deputy chairman of the southern province for the 2011-16 term.
“At that time the province could not afford a car for me,” Thanh said, claiming provincial leaders had allowed him to use the blue plate.
Thanh was appointed chairman of PetroVietnam Construction JSC, a subsidiary of the state-owned PetroVietnam, in 2009. The company was mired in debts of thousands of billions of dong by 2012-13.
He was moved to the Ministry of Industry and Trade in 2014 before being sent to Da Nang in May 2015.
