All four people in a family in Ho Chi Minh City were severely burned Wednesday by acid thrown on them, allegedly by a neighbor.
The parents and their 5 year old son are being treated at hospitals with burns in their eyes, while the daughter, 13, is staying with a relative with slight burns on her legs and butt.
Locals have identified the attacker as a neighbor who had small conflicts with the family, news website Dan Tri reported.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Xuan, the mother who is being treated at the city's leading hospital Cho Ray, said the man had come to their house in Go Vap District at 7 am and splashed a glass of acid into the face of her husband Nguyen Quoc Tuan and half of another glass on the boy, Nguyen Quoc Huy Bao, when the two were sitting at the front door.
Xuan said the man, only identified as D., was wearing a face mask and a rain coat though it's not raining at that time.
She got the other half of the second glass on her face when she ran downstairs after hearing her husband and son screaming. The daughter Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngoc also ran down and slipped on the acid on the floor.
The 36 year old said D. did not stop with the acid. He took out a knife, but Xuan managed to carry the children through the back door while her husband locked himself in the bathroom.
Doctors said the father, 38, carried burns on 40 percent of his body, including both his eyes. Many burns were deep, they said.
Xuan carried 20 percent burns, they said, adding both father and son were in bad condition.
Their son is also being treated at the intensive care section of the Children's Hospital No.2 with two burnt eyes and many burns over the body.
D.'s family has visited the victims one day after the attack and gave VND10 million (US$475) for the treatment.
Police are investigating the incident.
