More than 18,000 people will participate in a parade held to celebrate Hanoi's 1,000th anniversary in October, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Monday (May 24).

This number includes 3,000 who will join in a mass gymnastics display during the "Thang Long-Hanoi The city of Ascending Dragon" parade at My Dinh Stadium.

The ministry said it has also prepared back-up plans in case of rain or other exigencies.

The parade and related activities will be organized by writer Nguyen Khac Phuc,  composer Trong Dai who has written many songs about Hanoi, director Do Minh Tuan and well known emcee Lai Van Sam, head of the VTV3 channel.

There will also be a 20-minute fireworks show on October 10, the main night of the celebration.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung, head of the national steering committee for the celebration, said organizers have to do their best to leave a deep impression on residents nationwide as well as foreign visitors.

"During ten days of the celebration, we should let the Thang Long spirit shine," he said.

Hanoi was called Thang Long during its first days as Vietnam's capital a thousand years ago.
