Over ton of elephant tusks smuggled from Vietnam to China

Customs officials in the northern province of Quang Ninh recently said they found a Chinese man transporting more than one ton of elephant tusks from Vietnam to China, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Customs officials said they intercepted the transport in Mong Cai Town, which borders China.

The Chinese man, Lai Hoa Tai, was carrying 221 tusks weighing a total 1.06 kilograms, the news agency reported. The tusks were kept in sacks on the man's boat.

Tai said he was hired by another Chinese man to bring the tusks from Mong Cai to China.

Tai and the tusks have been transferred to Mong Cai's police division for further investigation, according to Vietnam News Agency.
