Marine police in northern Vietnam Saturday seized more than 500 tons of coal dust that was being smuggled into China.
One boat was caught trafficking 34 tons of coal dust and another 510 tons, said police from Quang Ninh, Vietnam coal excavation province which borders China.
The smaller boat was sailed by a man called Bui Duc Ba and the other by Dang Van Dung, both of whom failed to present documents for the cargo.
Police have seized the boats and coal for further investigation.
The provincial police Saturday also found that a 52 ton shipment of a sand like material caught in an anti-smuggling operation last month was rare earth.
It is estimated that the shipment is worth VND1.3 billion (US$61,860).
On October 18, the police caught three boats transporting the material to China.
The drivers said they were hired by a person named Vinh to take the cargo to China for VND3.6 million.
