One more soldier succumbed to injuries on Saturday, raising the overall death toll in a fatal helicopter crash in Hanoi early this month to 19.
Colonel Nguyen Manh Toan of Hanoi Military Command said Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Van Tuan of the commando battalion No. 18 passed away at 10.25 a.m.
Tuan’s commando unit was aboard a Russian-made MI-171 helicopter for a parachute-operation training on July 7 when the helicopter crashed due possibly to an engine power loss.
Sixteen were killed instantly. Two more soldiers succumbed to their injuries later that evening.
Tuan and two other soldiers were diagnosed with severe burns, respiratory burns due to inhalation of smoke at high temperatures, skull fractures and lung damage.
The two survivors, Nguyen Hoang Anh and Dinh Van Duong, remain in critical condition, Tuoi Tre newspaper quoted Nguyen Tien Binh, director of the Hanoi-based Military Medical Academy, as saying.
“The prognosis is poor,” Binh was quoted as saying.
“We are doing our best, but it would be a miracle if we could save their life,” he said.
Colonel Toan said Tuan was a sharp sniper who always complete his missions effectively.
