Two toddlers left at a private nursery in the southern town of Bien Hoa were rushed to hospital on June 17 with symptoms of burning and drowning.
Tran Thi Kieu My, an 18-month old girl, succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The other toddler remains in critical condition after three days in hospital.
My and Pham Hoang Thien Hoa, a 3-year old boy, were the only two children sent to the private nursery in the town’s Buu Hoa ward.
The kids were left alone in the house while the nursery's manager went shopping, Hoa’s mother, Nguyen Thi Huong, told Lao Dong newspaper following the incident.
Huong said after finding that the kids had fallen in to the household's reservoir, their nanny and others fished them out and put them into an empty, earthen pot placed over an open flame.
Some of the rescuers worried that the kids had gotten cold after falling into water and needed to be warmed, Huong said.
When the children were finally sent to the Dong Nai General Hospital, they'd both stopped breathing, their hearts were still and they'd suffered burns on their faces, legs, bellies and rears.
“I went to the nursery to pick up my boy at 6 p.m. and was told that he had been hospitalized after drowning and sustaining burns. I was told that the babysitter went shopping and left the kids at home with each other, while there was a reservoir inside the house,” said the woman whose son remains in a coma and is suffering severe respiratory problems.
