A sailor was killed and two have been reported missing after their boat was involved in a hit and run incident on the seas off the central province of Thua Thien-Hue early Thursday.
The boat was carrying six people including captain Phan Manh, 51. Nguyen Dai Ngu, 48, was killed while Manh and his son Phan Van Cu, 27, are missing. Three others were injured and saved by fishermen in the area.
The survivors said they'd gone out to sea three days earlier and were on the way back when their boat was hit and sunk by a cargo ship at 3:30 a.m. around 21 kilometers from Thuan An seaport.
The cargo boat fled the area after the accident.
Local authorities said they have launced search operations for the missing sailors.
Several Vietnamese fishing boats have been attacked and robbed of late in the East Sea waters over which Vietnam has proved its sovereignty. Most of these attacks reportedly involved Chinese boats.
Fishermen in the area have also reported seeing more boats with Chinese flags in the area recently.
