One person was killed and 12 others were injured when an oil tank exploded in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang Monday.

Eye-witness accounts say the incident happened about 30 minutes after workers began working at a small plant producing dried shrimp owned by Le Thi Ut in Kien Luong District.

An oil tank in the area where they cook raw materials went off, setting many people on fire.

People nearby helped the burned victims with sacks and water, while some jumped into a nearby pond, the VnExpress newswire reported.

The victims were rushed to the local hospital, but 18-year-old Truong Ngoc Tuyen, a worker, died on the way.

Seven others were critically injured and transferred to the Kien Giang General Hospital for treatment, the newswire reported.

Le Hung Linh, vice chairman of Kien Luong District's People's Committee, told the Tuoi Tre newspaper that the plant had failed to follow safety regulations in using home-made oil tanks, and the workers were not given employment contracts.
