Authorities in the central province of Binh Thuan on Wednesday assigned officials to investigate what they believe are oil chunks that started blackening a local beach two days ago.

Officials with the Binh Thuan Sea and Islands Agency said they have reported the case to the National Southern Oil Spill Response Center to seek solutions.

The oil chunks have been washing up on the beach in Tam Thanh Commune, Phu Quy Island.

Locals have begun collecting the chunks so they will not be absorbed into the soil, spoiling the island's rare fresh water sources, said Ta Minh Nhut, vice chairman of the Phu Quy People's Committee.

He suspects that the chunks have drifted to the island from elsewhere.

Local residents say it is the first time that such a phenomenon has taken place in Phu Quy.
