Authorities in the central province of Ha Tinh have suspended a local official after he was caught red-handed gambling, VnExpress reported Thursday.

Tran Quoc Toan, 39, who was in charge of supervising Ha Tinh Town's curtailing of social ills such as gambling and prostitution, has been asked to write reports on the case during his suspension, the newswire said.

According to VnExpress, on Wednesday local police raided a house in Nam Ha Ward and found Toan gambling with three others, including Dr. Nguyen Van Manh, secretary of Ha Tinh Province Department of Health's Youth Union.

Police confiscated nearly VND10 million (US$481), mobile phones and a deck of cards.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam and Vietnamese nationals are not allowed to enter casinos in the country.
