Authorities in the central province of Ha Tinh have fired an official for leaving people in the lurch during last month's heavy flooding.
In an interview with Thanh Nien Wednesday, Vo Cong Ham, Chairman of Duc Tho District's People's Committee said they have asked Nguyen Van Tuan to step down as Chairman of the Duc Lac Commune People's Committee, which is managed by the district.
According to Ham, on October 16, floodwaters threatened the life and property of many commune residents who, in turn, attempted to call Ham and ask to be evacuated.
However, when the District's agencies called Tuan, he didn't answer the phone, Ham said.
The district leaders later found that Tuan shuttered his office and avoided assisting district officials in evacuation and other flood control missions, Ham added.
