Police in Ha Tinh Province are investigating a wedding between a local official's son and a pregnant 14-year-old girl, local media reported.
Nguyen Van Tuong, deputy chairman of Huong Quang Ward in Vu Quang District, had reportedly invited dozens of guests and many local officials to the wedding reception of his 21-year-old son on Thursday.
Some of the guests, including the ward's chairman, found out that the bride is underage and reported the case to district authorities.
The legal marriage age in Vietnam is 20 for men and 18 for women.
The chairman, Nguyen Truong Tho, said Tuong will be strictly punished for the violation.
Official sources say the wedding was organized because the girl was pregnant.
She has quit school. Her parents told teachers that she was “being treated for an illness”.
Having sex with a minor between 13 and 16 years old is a serious crime punishable by up to 15 years in jail. Longer terms will be considered if the girl become pregnant.
