A traffic official in Dak Nong Province reportedly leapt to his death on Thursday at a police station soon after he told his interrogator that he'd taken bribes.
Nguyen Tan Man, head of the a traffic inspection team and deputy head of a vehicle weigh station unit, was rushed to the hospital immediately after the incident and succumbed to severe injuries 30 minutes later.
Police say that Man asked his interrogator to go to the restroom at around 5pm.
Once out of the room, the 37-year old officer suddenly hurled himself over a balcony on the police station’s second floor.
According to Commander Pham Thanh Binh of the business criminal investigative division at the provincial police department, Man admitted to taking bribes from numerous overloaded truck owners passing through the weigh station he was assigned to before killing himself.
Traffic inspectors, who are employed by the Ministry of Transport and not part of traffic police, are charged with imposing fines on traffic violators for things like parking violations and overweight vehicles.
