Police in Dong Nai on Wednesday arrested a former official for allegedly collecting another man's pension for 25 years.
Nguyen Manh Suu, the former deputy head of the People’s Committee in Bien Hoa Town’s Binh Da ward, was arrested at around 3 p.m. December 31, police said.
Suu was suspended from his post in March after authorities discovered that he had appropriated Cao Hong Dinh's entire retirement pension (roughly VND316 million or US$14,800).
Dinh worked in a Military Zone 7's unit and retired in 1988.
Authorities stopped paying his pension two months later pending the results of an investigation into an undisclosed matter.
Following the conclusion of that investigation, Dinh inquired about his pension, but Nguyen Manh Suu, who headed the ward's pension management department at the time, said Dinh’s retirement funds hadn't been restored.
Dinh didn't hear anything more about his money until one day in July 2013, when he suddenly received a notice from the provincial Social Insurance Department asking him to receive his pension “as usual”.
Dinh then discovered that his pension had been collected every month by someone else.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the vice chairman of the Binh Da ward had “helped” him draw his pension for 25 years.
