Ho Chi Minh City police said two officers were hit by a smugglers' boat during a raid in a local canal early Wednesday following which 50,000 packs of cigarettes were seized.
Police said they also seized six boats and arrested one suspect.
Officers laid an ambush in Rau Ram Canal at 2 a.m. after being tipped off that the goods would be smuggled from neighboring Long An Province to the city by boats.
Six boats arrived at the scene at around 4 a.m. When four of them approached a pier where the smuggled tobacco was to be unloaded, police officers decided to spring the trap.
The two boats that remained in the middle of stream u-turned to escape. One of them rammed a police speedboat and injured Lieutenants Do Canh Thanh and Le Nguyen Anh Tuan, who were rushed to hospital.
Thanh was discharged in the afternoon while Tuan is still under doctors’ observation.
But they only caught one smuggler and are looking for others.
