Police in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau arrested a former official
for defaming senior government and local officials.
Nguyen Van Tuan, 59, former chief of the provincial office in charge of receiving people's complaints, will be detained for four months for investigations into charges of "abusing freedom and democratic rights to violate the interests of the State."
On Friday the police searched the residences of Tuan and his family and seized some documents.
Tuan has written many complaints related to a familial land dispute since 2007. In the letters, he insulted and defamed senior government and local officials, police said without elaborating.
In 2009, the provincial People's Committee removed Tuan from his post and the provincial Party's Committee expelled him from Party membership.
