The fact it is illegal has not stopped people from rushing to a stone cave in Bac Kan Province after gold was discovered there earlier this month, VietNamNet said Wednesday.
Vi Van Chan, chairman of Huong Ne Commune at Ngan Son District, told the news website that the cave really has gold and many people have found the precious metal.
But it's not known how much gold there is inside, he added.
Local residents started to rush to the cave between Lang Ngam and Huong Ne Communes, Ngan Son District, several days ago after a man while chasing a snake had run through the cave and found a lot of gold in mineral sand.
"We have talked to the residents and tried to stop them, so fewer people have come today (Wednesday) but we still had to persuade hundreds of people inside the cave to go home," Chan said.
Local officials would have to use strong measures to force them to leave, he said.
Then, they might have to set off mines to close the cave entrance and protect any gold inside, Chan added.
