Typhoon Kujira will hit northern provinces and cities, with Hai Phong City being the center of the storm, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecast Center.
The center said in a release at 9 a.m. the first storm recorded by Vietnam this year was around 60-70 kilometer southeast of the coastal areas stretching from Quang Ninh to Thai Binh provinces.
The storm will make landfall in northern provinces from Quang Ninh to Thai Binh in the afternoon, it said.
Hai Phong is likely to be the center of the storm, an official of the center told Thanh Nien.
The center called on people in northern provinces to keep a close watch on the development of the storm, which they said is "complicated".
Strong winds and heavy rains caused by the storm raged on northern provinces and cities, including Hanoi, this morning.
