A police officer in the northern province of Nghe An was stabbed in the neck at his home Saturday night, news website VietNamNet said in a report Monday.
Nguyen Xuan Tuyen, the deputy police chief of Phu Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District, suffered a wound five centimeters wide and six centimeters deep.
Doctors at the district general hospital said that Tuyen would have died if the stab had occurred just a few milimeters away.
Tuyen said the attacker stabbed him repeatedly and that he did his best to avoid each attack.
The attacker, identified as Nguyen Huu Quynh, told the police that he and Tuyen had a previous conflict and he wanted to take revenge.
Police plan to charge Quynh with attempted murder.
