An Agribank employee from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa was charged with embezzlement Tuesday after he allegedly stole more than US$1 million from nearly 400 customers' accounts.
Ngo Binh Son, 28, former deputy head of the budget and accounting office at the branch in Nhu Xuan District, was arrested recently after fleeing to Cambodia when he became a suspect in April, news website VnExpress reported.
Son told police that he started stealing to pay for his illegal football gambling habit.
In October last year, he established six false bank accounts and then transfered money from nearly 400 customer accounts into the false accounts.
Le Ngoc Bong, director of the branch, said he and other bank leaders are working with local police to assign responsibility.
