A magnitude three Richter earthquake hit the northern province of Dien Bien Wednesday night, the Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Warning said Thursday.

According to Nguyen Hong Phuong, deputy director of the center, the minor quake happened at 9.59 p.m., causing no damage to humans or construction works.

The quake took place in the Son La fracture zone, which has been a hub for big earthquakes, including the biggest ever to hit Vietnam in 1983 with 6.1-magnitude, Phuong said.

Since the beginning of this year, several minor quakes have hit Vietnam, mainly in the northern region.
