A Nigerian man and his Vietnamese girlfriend have been arrested in Ho Chi Minh City for allegedly smuggling methamphetamine from Africa into Vietnam by mail.
The Express Mail Customs Division said that on November 8 customs officers found 250 grams of crystal meth in two bottle-shaped handicraft items sent from Nairobi, Kenya, to D.T.T.N, 40.
They had been declared as accessories for interior decoration.
The customs agency and the city police's drug crime division (PC47) arreseted the woman, and she told them she was supposed to hand over the drugs to her boyfriend, A.D.A, 32, a Nigerian teaching English in the city.
Following her tipoff, authorities arrested the man as he was receiving the drugs from N. at a hotel in Phu Nhuan District the next day.
Investigations are continuing.
Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
