Nearly 1,000 children are sexually abused every year in Vietnam, the Vietnamnet news website quoted the latest report from the Ministry of Public Security as saying on Thursday.
According to a report submitted by the ministry's General Anti-Crime Police Department at a meeting in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho Wednesday, between 2006 and 2010, nearly 7,900 cases of child abuse were detected, 58.8 percent of which sexual.
Of the sexual abuse cases, 2,718 children were victims of statutory rape, it said.
The number of young children, as young as four years old, being sexually abused was increasing, said the department, which organized the meeting to review the national anti-child abuse program between 2006 and 2010.
In many cases, child victims were even killed after being raped, it said.
The report also pointed out that over the five years reviewed, more than 79,000 juvenile delinquents were arrested, and every year young people committed more than 10,000 crimes.
It said 80 percent of the juvenile delinquents came from poor families and had parents who divorced and were also criminals, alcoholics or gamblers.
