A Vietnamese guest worker has died in unclear circumstances in Malaysia, with the recruiter claiming it was suicide, authorities in the central province of Quang Tri said Friday.

Ho Van Van, a 21-year-old Van Kieu ethnic minority resident in Quang Tri's Dakrong District, was sent to Malaysia by Hanoi-based VietCom Manpower Supply and Trade Joint Stock Company.

On Friday, Ho Van Choang, a police officer in Dakrong, told Thanh Nien that representatives of VietCom informed him that Van had died in Malaysia.

"They said without elaborating that Van violated the company's rules and killed himself," Choang said.

When Van's family expressed their wish to bring his body back home for burial, the company said it was not feasible, he added.

Vietnamese authorities are still investigating the death, Choang said.
