Three Chinese-produced motorbikes caught fire when they were being carried on a truck after being seized by police for traffic violations in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho Friday.

Initial information is that that day the three Honda Wave bikes were being brought to the Phong Dien District police station when one of them caught fire. The fire soon spread to the other bikes as well.

After passers by spotted the fire and warned him, the truck driver got out of the vehicle and tried to extinguish the fire with the help of some people nearby.

However, the bikes were totally burned down and the truck suffered significant damage, police said.

The case is now under investigation.

In related news, police in the southern province of Dong Nai were investigating a case in which an SYM Attila was burned in another mysterious fire one day earlier

According to Tran Thi Lieu, who bought the bike in August, 2007, the fire broke out when she was checking it following a breakdown.

More than a hundred vehicles, limited to no types and brands, have caught fire across Vietnam since early last year and no conclusion has been reached about their cause, although poor and spurious gasoline has emerged a main suspect.

A Thanh Nien investigation last month found many tankers stopped on their way to gas stations, siphoned of gas and mixed additives suspected to be combustible substances like ethanol or methanol.
