A man has been detained in north central Vietnam for allegedly beating a police officer who had pulled him over on his motorbike for violations.

Tran Huy Dong, 28, from Ha Tinh Province reportedly struck a first lieutenant in the face, breaking his glasses and lacerating an eyelid, news website VnExpress reported Sunday.

Dong was traveling with two other men on the motorbike on Wednesday and none of them were wearing helmets.

Vietnam's traffic laws only allow up to two adults on a motorbike and crash helmets have been obligatory for motorbike travelers since December 2007.

As First Lieutenant Nguyen Van Minh pulled the group over, three more friends of Dong simultaneously arrived on another motorbike and confronted the officer.

Minh claims he was attacked when he was calling for backup.
