The Ho Chi Minh City police Monday began to investigate the role played by three Agribank officials in a VND20 billion (US$960,000) embezzlement case in which another official has already been arrested.
Pham Thi Thanh Huong, deputy director of the Binh Thanh District branch, has been arrested along with Do Huu Khuong, deputy chief accountant.
Dinh Thi Thu Ngan, a teller, has not been taken in though she faces the same charge as them of "deliberately violating regulations."
Since August Huong and Khuong headed an ATM management board along with Nguyen Thanh Nhan, a marketing officer at the branch.
But the two allowed Nhan to make all decisions, enabling him to steal money from the bank. He was arrested earlier for "embezzlement."
Also on Monday police in the northern city of Hai Phong arrested Le Thi Vung, an Agribank teller, following complaints from 70 people that she had cheated them out of nearly VND20 billion through a loan scam.
Several Agribank employees have been convicted or arrested for embezzlement recently, many to finance gambling habits.
Prosecutors in Ho Chi Minh City earlier this month laid charges against four officials at a local branch for allegedly taking bribes to allow a client to embezzle more than $5.33 million using fake company names.
Another banker was arrested in the city in October for allegedly stealing $1 million.
On July 17 a court in Binh Dinh Province handed a life sentence to a teller for stealing nearly $1 million.
That came just 15 days after a Hanoi court sentenced one employee to death and two others to life for embezzling more than $2.18 million.
